my great uncle just replaced his. He went to the deere dealer and they wanted something like $5 a piece! He went to pep boys or some other car parts place and he paid something like $1.85
Imo I tried the champion on my P218 and I couldn't keep my engine idle after checking the carb all it could be was my spark plugs, so I crossed the number over to autolite and bought me a set and she idled perfectly fine.
JMO here - I have found NGK to be the best plugs for small 1 and 2 cylinder engines. (I work on a lot of 2-stroke m/c engines). The NGK's don't foul as easy as the others and seem to last longer. Obviously - it's important to have the correct heat range plug for your engine, esp. a 2-stroke.
Hi Alan,
I have an 83 also and have been using the NGK TR5 with no problems. How many hours do you have on yours. I have around the 1100 now. I use mine mostly for landscaping and tilling the garden only.
Alan
NGK here as well. With the exception of my current motorcycle, all my not car/truck stuff has NGK plugs in it. The only reason the VTX doesnt is because the Bosch +4 plugs seem to work better in that particular application.
I picked up the tr5 but it didn't have the washers so it seemed too long, figured I bought the wrong ones, did you notice it was a bit different? Also it was v grooved, ended up putting in the champions. Maybe I should give them another shot though...
In the JD manual for both Onan they suggest CHAMPION RS14YC or NGK BPR5EFS
The TR5 is a BPR5EFS improved with the V groove.
All of them have taper seat, not washer.
Is your engine is the original?
Andre
I just google imaged the 12yc and no washers, weird. Mine did look pretty buggered up, wonder if someone jammed them on there. Did you guys re-gap your plugs to .025 when first installed?
After reading about NGK TR 5 plugs I decided to change mine on 318 however went to install my manual said gap to be 025 the ngk plugs were gaped way more than that is the gap good on those plugs
