Finally isolated the leak in my hydro. The PTO seal is the culprit. Can this seal be replaced without tearing the whole hydro down? This is the mid PTO that runs the mower deck. Not afraid to tear into it, but it is almost mowing season.....any tips, lessons learned, etc. would be appreciated.

Went to my local JD dealer. Ordered a new seal, spoke to a garden tractor tech who said the seal "should" be able to be removed without disassembly of the transaxle. He said to use a small screwdriver to pierce the seal and then basically pry it out. He said it will probably come out in pieces. Replacement is just driven in. We shall see, I guess. I have both the JD and Tuff Torq service manuals and they are really almost no help on this item.

Seal came out in about 1 minute. Very easy. Followed what JD tech said. Came out in 1 piece, too. Waiting on new seal to come in, hope by Tuesday. Should have tackled sooner, waited until Saturday because I figured it would take much longer. Already made the pipe/tool to intall the new seal.

No digital camera right now. Seal went in as easy as it came out. Refilled trans and it appears to have taken care of that leak. Will see if any others show up, now. Onward to the mower deck service, almost time to start cutting grass.
