Hey everyone...Was wondering if someone can explain the proper procedure for installing these belts. I bought new from Deere, but they sure don't seem large enough to get around the larger lower pulley. I have the tensioner bolt about as loose as it will go. For reference the belt no. they sold me is M811283. Does this sound like the right belt? The owners manual doesn't mention a thing about it. Is there something I'm missing as far as how to get these things on? Any help appreciated as always!

Thanks Chuck. I'll look into that. This will be the third trip back to JD. The dealer here has some nice guys, but seem to be clueless when it comes to parts. The first belt (ordered of course) was about 4ft. in diameter!

Mr Stewart, The technical manual explains it very well.. I wish i could send you a copy but mine is the paper version.. there are others here that have the pdf versions that are always willing to help out with these things.. Welcome to WFM!!

Thank you Joe...I think I've got the actual install procedure figured out. I'm really beginning to believe I have the wrong size belt. I think I'll call some of the JD dealers that advertise on this sight and compare part nos. The other thing I realized is that it requires two belts, and the parts guy didn't mention that at all while I was at JD to get the belt (I didn't realize it either - first time replacing the belts). Anyhoo, I have been a member of WFM for quite awhile, but I haven't been participating lately. Something happened with my member info, so I had to register all over again. I've had my 430 for about 5 years. I also have a 214, and a 314. Would like to restore them all some day, but man there's just not enough time in the day! I really enjoy this site and all the great members. Love the vintage JD L&G tractors!

Yep...wrong belt. The guy at "Keeping it Green" said the part number from the belt they sold me doesn't fit any tractor. It's a belt that goes to some JD factory assembly component! Unbelievable! I'll be ordering my parts online from now on....

I never walk into a JD dealer without part numbers. I look everything up on JD Parts first and get the numbers. I wish I could just order them straight from JD parts and get them sent right to my door instead of ordering them through a dealer, they get sent there then if I want them shipped the dealer needs to ship them.

Know what you mean Mike. The shipping charges for the belt set was $11.00! But what do you do? I spent that much on gas running back and forth to a dealer that doesn't give a darn. I don't know why it has to be so difficult. "PTO drive belts for a 1992 John Deere 430 L&G Tractor" Should pop right up on their parts screen. I think they need better parts software, or maybe brighter employees. Maybe both! I need to get a parts list for all my tractors I guess. Love these deeres, but they ain't cheap!
