Anyone know about the compatability of parts between these 2 engines, particularly the flywheel? Thx, Bryan.

Pretty sure these are the same engine. Saw it recently listed in one of my JD manuals.

My father has a Steiner, which i love, which has the LX790 (20hp) linamar. I tuned it up last week. it was nearly identical to the p218 i recently went through. never worked on a p220 but i am sure its almost the same. specs and all.

The only major difference that would be a problem between these two engines would be a custom crank shaft. Depending on what they were built for, they crank shaft may be different. If you can verify that the crank shaft is the same length and diameter on both, then the engines are identical and can be interchanged. I swapped a Performer 20 into a P218 with no trouble. It was a drop in replacement.

There are many variants of the Onan crankshaft, but the one that fits the Deere machines is the 140-1700, which is found in engines with code 45BD and 45BE. Attached is the parts catalog from Onan that covers the Performer and the Linamar engines -- you will see there are very few differences in the parts specified...

Bryan,

The Onan engines in the Deere machines typically used the 23DJ version of the flywheel which had no rotating screen. If you look up the engine spec number in the catalog provided above you will get all the options fitted to that engine. The P218 used in a 318 was engine spec 10462B (and maybe some others...)
