hey guys have a problem I have an onan p218g that I just reringed pistons, crankshaft, cylinder walls all measured great.Honed cylinders and reassembled with all new gaskets and seals. When I got ready to install camshaft I noticed the block was missing the little soft plug on the right side of camshaft.I posted on this site earlier weather it was suppose to have one or not.A gentleman named Joe responded that yes indeed it was suppose to have one because that was the soft plug that keeps the oil pressure regulated and without it the engine would have low oil pressure.I ordered 2 from sears and installed the soft plug when I started the engine it blew the oil filter gasket out (WHAT A MESS).So I pulled the cam took out the plug reassembled the engine and she ran like a champ for over an hour on my test stand.Worried that missing the plug would hurt the engine and thinking maybe I just twisted the oil filter gasket I pulled the cam again and reinstalled the 2nd soft plug. When I started the engine it blew the oil filter gasket again. So my question is are those soft plugs on all p218g engines or do I have another problem causing them to blow.I checked the pressure regulating valve and it is functioning properly and not stuck. My engine is one with the breather attached to the block with the little balls in the breather. The reason Im stating this is I went to my neighbors who had an exact block and it too was missing that soft plug.

I remember the thread James, I would put it back together with out the plug and get an oil pressure gauge on it and see what you have for pressure, if its good I would leave it at that. There must be a reason for all these blocks not having the plug in them. Some have oil filters and some don't, wonder if thats the difference.

James,

When you rebuilt your engines, did you remove the bolt and spring from the top of the block and insurer that the oil pressure relief valve is not stuck shut in the block. If the oil pressure relief valve does not operate the pressure build up forces the oil filter base gasket to blow out, causing a major mass. This is exactly the problem I experienced earlier this year, rebuilding a B43G block that had been sitting for a long time. If the valve is stuck down in the block you can try removing it with a telescopic magnet, this however did not work for me. I had to drill out the soft plug, and then could access the relief valve from underneath through the soft plug hole with a small pick. Unfortunately, this requires removal of the camshaft to access the soft plug. If you have questions about this, give me a call at 517-930-7469 as I had to learn it the hard way. Joe

Joe thanks again for the opportunity to talk to you on the phone about the problem Im having with my p218g. As I explained to Joe my relief valve is NOT stuck and seems to function properly when I apply compressed air to the hole where the oil filter screws on. I have checked the spring length and removed the valve from the block and they both seem fine. If anyone has any idea why this engine is building up enough oil pressure to blow out the oil filter gasket please feel free to chime in. Also I have blown compressed air in the passages going to the main bearing in the rear bearing plate and in the timing cover and they are all open. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jame's I was on JD parts, on the early b43e engines they show the plug (HE517-0067 PLUG) thats the engine that does not have an oil filter, on the p218 they do not show the plug, and it does have an oil filter. That makes me think that if the engine has a filter it does not need that plug. I would still put on oil pressure gage on the engine to make sure it has good pressure running it with out the plug, you can get an oil pressure gage at HF for 25 and cheaper when on sale.

Both Onan's in the 318 (B43G and P218G) have the soft plug and oil filter. The oil pressure relief valve and filter was set-up remotely on F910 series front mount mowers with the Onan B48G or P220G and had two pressure relief valves. One on the block and another one in the remote oil filter base. I was wondering Jim, what air pressure you used to check the operation of the oil pressure relief valve. My technical manual states slow idle oil pressure is 10-15 psi and high idle is 18-22 psi. Just a thought. Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for your responses. Gator I have 4 old blocks sitting around here 2 are p-series and 2 are b-series they all have the oil filter adapter on them And only 1 of them a p218g block is missing that plug. Also as I stated yesterday I went to my neighbors he had a p-series block just like mine and it was missing the plug also. Joe I applied air as I described earlier at the rate of around 40 psi and felt air coming out the hole its suppose to at the top of the relief valve are you saying maybe its working because of too much air pressure? I can dial down the air pressure on my compressor but its kinda difficult to cover all the holes the oil goes to and blow air into the block at the same time.

James,

That is what is was thinking. Maybe it is not opening at lower pressures. If you removed the valve from the block and test ran the engine this might narrow down the problem to the relief valve. Monitoring of oil pressure gauge for this test might be a good idea. Joe.

James,

I went through the B43G, B48G, P216G, P218G, P220G and the P224G parts manuals and they all show the 517-0067 core plug being used. The only notation I found was on the P216, P218 & P220 engines where it stated for Spec # A & B.

Also, on the JD Parts website it does show the core plug being used on the B43G and the P218G.

the full spec #is P218G-I/11081C and as I mentioned in an earlier post one thing different on this block is that it has the breather with the little balls inside attached to the block not the block where the breather has a tube from the valve cover box to the air cleaner box. Thanks Bob

This engine smoked Bob so I reringed it.Yes I just checked the oil transfer tube yesterday removed the bearing plate and checked all passages there also.As I said in an earlier post I ran the engine without the plug and it ran super strong with no smoke but as soon as I put the plug back in it blew the filter gasket out. I really wished I would have checked the oil pressure while I had the engine running without the plug installed.I was just worried running it without the plug in would create low oil pressure and didn't want to ruin my engine.

James,

You can remove the relief valve and spring and test run the engine without disturbing the camshaft. Just re-insert the fine thread cap screw and copper washer. You would not have to run it very long to eliminate the valve as the cause, as currently it will dump oil as soon as you start it up.
